Mother wellness relaxation sessions

These sessions cater to presenting symptoms of postnatal depression and sleep deprivation. These sessions focus on the wellness and quality of life of mom as well as providing her with life-changing coping skills to adjust to this life change. Ie. relaxation and sleep therapy.

Child Treatments

Fine motor skills

Skills that require small, calculated movements of the hands, fingers, and wrists are formally termed “Fine Motor Skills”. These include academic-related tasks such as cutting and coloring as well as tasks such as, using zippers and buttons, typing and using utensils for eating. Fine Motor Skills are also crucial for performing everyday skills like dressing, toileting, schoolwork, or using technology. While Fine Motor Skills are often overlooked during early childhood, without developing an adequate skill-set, an individual can experience a diminished sense of independence, self-esteem, and academic performance can be compromised.

Gross motor skills

Skills that require controlled body movement using large muscle groups are known as Gross Motor Skills. They allow individuals to perform functions such as sitting optimally, standing upright, walking, running and also include less active competencies such as balance, hand-eye coordination, and body awareness. While Gross Motor Skills are most commonly associated with activities of daily living (dressing, eating, and self-care) academic and leisure activities can also be impacted by Gross Motor issues.

Sensory Processing Skills

Sensory Processing often referred to as Sensory Integration, refers to the nervous system’s ability to receive messages from the six senses and respond with the appropriate motor movement and emotional response. When children have a delayed or immature reaction to certain sensory inputs, it means that the information being received from their environment is being inaccurately interpreted resulting in an abnormal response. Issues such as being bothered by certain clothing fabrics, distress from light or unexpected touch, and hypersensitivity to sound are common signs of Sensory Processing concerns.

Adolescent treatments

Emotional regulation

Helping individuals identify, acknowledge, and describe their emotions. Allowing unconditional self-acceptance that ultimately results in emotional regulation. Preventing them from avoiding feelings and choosing actions that impact on their well-being.

Healthy coping skills

Coping strategies are the actions we take to deal with stress, problems, or uncomfortable emotions. Unhealthy coping strategies often provide instant gratification or relief but have long-term negative consequences. In contrast, healthy coping strategies don’t always feel good in the moment, but they contribute to long-lasting positive outcomes.

Anxiety management & Relaxation therapy

Anxiety management: Learning to manage stress can help limit potential triggers. Organize any upcoming pressures and deadlines, compile lists to make daunting tasks more manageable.

Relaxation techniques: Patient-specific activities can help soothe the mental and physical signs of anxiety. These techniques include meditation, deep breathing exercises, and visualization sessions.

Self & Self-esteem development

Self-development : The development of growth mindset techniques that allow patients to believe in their most basic abilities which can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.

Self-esteem development : When you have low self-esteem, you tend to see yourself, the world, and your future more negatively and critically. You might feel anxious, sad, low, or unmotivated. Cognitive Behavioural techniques are used within the occupational therapy techniques targeting these core beliefs.

Insight development

Providing a psychiatric form of awareness of the illness. It refers to improving the capability of psychiatric patients to recognize and accept that they are suffering from a mental illness. Insight is composed of three main dimensions, i.e., psychical, somaesthetic, and emotional.

Recovery guidance & sobriety management

A process(12 step program) of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life and strive to reach their full potential. Recovery is culturally-based and influenced. Recovery is supported by addressing trauma. Recovery involves individual, family, and community strengths and responsibility. When someone says they are “in Recovery,” they usually mean they are receiving treatment for their drug or alcohol addiction. Treatment is based on the 5 pillars of recovery.

We Have Great Answers

Ask Us Anything

If your child’s doctor or teacher has referred you to LIFESTEM OT then highlighted areas of development should be further explored by means of a full Occupational Therapy assessment where standardized tests and structured activities are used to confirm and conclude any difficulties that the child is experiencing as well as the cause thereof.
If ongoing therapy is recommended, children begin sessions with their allocated occupational therapist at the practice and usually participate in a 30 minute or 45-minute session once a week at the practice. Children are brought in by their parents. Sessions are carefully planned and structured according to each child’s unique profile. Feedback is provided after each session and recommendations are provided for management at home and in the classroom. We maintain close contact with teachers and parents to ensure maximum benefit from the Occupational Therapy program. Psychiatric patients consult with sessions on the online portal.
We are a cash practice, however, our rates are within the medical aid allowance for 2022 and parents are able to claim reimbursement from their medical aid providers once accounts have been settled with the practice directly. Please request our terms and conditions for 2022 which include our updated rates for each type of patient.

This is dependent on the specific needs of the patient however therapy duration can range from 3 months to two years and this is monitored and communicated once the patient has undergone assessment.

A minimum of two weeks is required to compile the patient’s assessment results and intervention recommendations.
